About 60 students, along with several Computer Information Science faculty and industry partners, attended the launch of the Los Rios Community College District ACM ( Association for Computing Machinery ) Student Chapter on December 6, 2018 at Sacramento City College(SCC).

SCC Student Emily Baker was instituted as Student Chair and Sagar Kumathe as Co-Chair of the new LRCCD ACM Student Chapter.

SCC’s Professor Abida Mukarram, faculty sponsor for the new LRCCD ACM Student Chapter, gave a brief introduction on activities for the chapter. The plan is to rotate invited speaker events between all four Los Rios Colleges (American River College, Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College, and Sacramento City College).

During the event several Computer Information Science professors at SCC were given Intel IOT SEEED Grove Kits to encourage them to implement curriculum and activities related to the Internet of Things.

Dr. Harsh Verma, Chairman of the ACM Sacramento Chapter which was instrumental in supporting the launch of the LRCCD ACM Student Chapter, gave an introductory talk on AI, Machine Learning and IOT, and he also introduced students to the Intel Innovator programs and the Intel Movidius Neural Compute Stick. Dr. Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood, an IBM Fellow and the Chief Scientist/Overall Lead for the global Medical Sieve Radiology Grand Challenge project in IBM Research at the company’s Almaden Research Center, then spoke on “The Role of Deep Learning & AI in Clinical Decision Support for Imaging”.

After the talk students and members of the ACM professional chapter took advantage of the opportunity tonetwork while enjoying some pizza and refreshments.
