Promoting Community College Programs Through Cyber Competitions

In February more than 1,200 high school students competed across the state in the California Mayors Cyber Cup. This unique competition brings students, parents, teachers, government officials and business leaders together to bring cybersecurity awareness to communities and to help build a cybersecurity workforce in California. It is also an excellent opportunity for community colleges to strengthen relationships with feeder high schools and promote college programs. Virtual Labs: Practice Labs in the South Central Coast Region

After a thorough vetting process, the South Central Coast Region has implemented the Practice Labs virtual lab system to bring cloud-based labs to its eight community colleges. Practice Labs offers easy integrations with Canvas and other learning management systems and gives students access to all of the tools they need in one place with a single sign-on. The system also saves time for faculty in managing their classes and grading student work. The California Community College Chancellor’s Office, through its Vision for Success website, provides access to free video trainings produced by Skillsoft and LinkedIn Learning. For instructors teaching IT/Cybersecurity courses there are literally hundreds of useful video classes you can take.

Learning content is not limited to technology fields. Video courses available on the site are applicable across a broad range of disciplines useful for just about any course faculty teach.

The Online Network of Educators (@ONE)

@ONE offers a variety of free or low-cost professional development opportunities, whether you’re interested in a quick webinar or workshop to improve your online course, or a certificate program designed to take your online course design or teaching practices to the next level.
